Auto Locksmith Specialists works across the full Toyota range — older Auris, Avensis and Verso models, through Yaris, Aygo, Corolla, C-HR and RAV4, to Prius and the newer hybrid and electric line-up. We also cover Hilux and Land Cruiser, including working vehicles that need to be back on the road the same day. Whether your Toyota uses a plain blade key, a remote-locking key with a flip blade, or a Smart Key with push-button start, we cut and programme replacements at the roadside using professional diagnostic equipment, without towing the car to a Toyota dealership.
Toyota key types and blade profiles
Most older and mid-generation Toyotas use the TOY43 blade — also sold as TOY44 or TR47 — for the traditional metal key and flip-key range. Later models, including Smart Key cars, moved to the laser-cut TOY48 profile, which is also the shape of the fold-out emergency blade hidden inside a Smart Key fob. Knowing which one your car takes is the first step to cutting a key that actually fits the lock.
Coding a key to the immobiliser
Toyota key security has moved through several generations, and the right approach depends on which one your car uses. Older models run a Texas Crypto 4D-67 transponder. From around 2010, Toyota moved to the G chip, and from roughly 2013 onwards to the H chip, which uses 128-bit DST-AES encryption. You can often tell them apart by a small letter stamped on the metal blade — a G, an H, or on the oldest keys just a dot. Cutting the blade is only half the job. The transponder still has to be registered to the car's immobiliser ECU, known as the ID code box, and on Smart Key cars to the Smart Key ECU as well, sometimes called the certification ECU. Get that wrong and the engine will crank but not run.
Locked out, or a worn ignition
Locked out of your Toyota? We use non-destructive entry methods, so you get back in without a broken window, damaged door skin or torn weather seal. If your ignition barrel has worn — a familiar fault on higher-mileage Toyotas, where the wafers inside the lock wear down until the key turns roughly, sticks at accessory position, or will not turn at all against the steering lock — we can strip, repair or replace the barrel and match it to your existing key where the vehicle allows. On Smart Key models there is no barrel, but the mechanical door lock and the emergency blade hidden inside the fob still fail in the same way, and we handle both.
Smart Key faults and all keys lost
Smart Key faults are one of our most common Toyota call-outs. The car reports the key as not detected, or the start button stops responding. The usual causes are a flat coin cell in the fob, corroded or slack battery contacts inside the case, water ingress, or a weak 12V vehicle battery, which can throw a smart key system warning even with a fresh fob battery. Most of these we diagnose and fix on site. All keys lost is also covered. Toyota's own procedure requires erasing the stored key codes from the immobiliser ECU and the Smart Key ECU and registering fresh keys from scratch, which wipes every key previously paired to the car. We carry the equipment for this and work across Dorset, Hampshire and Salisbury, 24 hours a day — usually the same day for Hilux and Land Cruiser working vehicles.
